Chassahowitzka, pronounced ‘chazz-uh-wits-kuh,’ and means “Hanging Pumpkin.” The locals just call it The Chazz. Our Chassahowitzka kayak tour takes through part of the almost 31,000 acres or wild frontier, saltwater bays, marshlands and forests that makes up the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Refuge. It’s a perfect example of a marshland ecosystem.

Since hiking is almost impossible, it’s perfect for a kayak tour. By kayak we’ll see part of the refuge which is home to over 250 species of birds, over 50 species of reptiles and amphibians, and at least 25 different species of mammals, including the manatee. It’s also the winter home of the famous Whooping Crane. Our Kayak Tour will take us along the headwaters of the river where we’ll get to see numerous freshwater springs. We’ll also go up to the famous “Hole in the Wall” for a chance to take a dip in the springs there.
